Interior storms, 2 versions. This year I made one with narrower sides (1/2 inch wide). It was hard to find stock wood of that width that was good and straight, but I like the results (except I didn't use the right plastic on it, but the next one will be perfect.
I am throwing in a couple photos of other insulating measures. My great-grandmother's door curtain that I inherited, works great on the windowed door; ties back for daytime light. The other curtain (circa 1950s) is a thin one slipped over the upper stop (which slides out). A nice added layer for the really cold nights we had, and easy to take down when the sun was shining.

Doesn't match but it worked. Slid right over the upper stop. |

Julie, excellent tips for energy savings. Also consider simple roller shades. I once read a study from Canada that roller shades improved energy saving by 8%--and that ain't hay.

|
|
my sash are still in the basement with some tricky repairs and glass replacement to come. So interior storm was essential even though there is a fine exterior storm. Looks pretty nice from outside. Here you can see the storm, backer rod, the gray metal accurate weather stripping on the bottom that the sash will fit into, and the sill that needs painting.
