I admit it: I'm swamped by all the questions coming in about how to care for historic buildings. I appreciate the confidence you all have in my ability to provide you with accurate information right when you need it. When I know the answer to your question I want to reply with everything I know that could help you, so it seems impolite to give you just a cursory response. In my experience "quick tips" are no good because they are more likely to get you deeper into your problem than move you toward a solution. There simply is not enough free time in my day to reply to all your questions and earn a living. If you will help me earn a living I will help you with your questions.
Recently several of you have offered payment (and actually sent a check) for replying to a question. So, I have developed this new Q&A Service policy for answering your questions.
If you are looking for referrals to tradespeople or contractors who can work on your building, you must use the $100. service level or above.
| Payment Level* | Response ** | Features |
| $50. | Within 3 Days |
|
| $100. | Next Day |
|
| $200. | Next Day |
|
| * these rates are based on what people
have offered to pay in the recent past ** except when I am traveling, which is about twice a month, when all replies may be delayed up to one week |

What if you cannot pay and are not getting a reply? Do your own homework here at Historic HomeWorks. Search to find the answer to your question. I have already spent hundreds of hours in your behalf to bring you over half-a-million words of the best preservation information. Put in some effort to study and find your own answers. Or, submit your question at the Historic HomeWorks Forum.
What if you can afford something but not $50.? Consider buying one or more Practical Restoration Reports. These reports include answers to the most frequently asked questions on each topic covered. If you buy a report and your question remains unanswered email it to me and I will reply. Put "PRR Customer" in the Subject field of your email. In the body of your email provide the date of your report purchase along with the exact revision date or revision number found on the last page of the report.
Is it worth it? Your payment only guarantees a reply. The reply may or may not be useful. Check my Questions & Answers Column for a large sampling of my replies to determine their character and quality for yourself. You might even find the answer to your question -- free of charge.
What if I don't have an answer to your question? Hey, I don't pretend to know everything. I'll let you know if I cannot answer your question -- no charge.
